Rob is a brilliant tutor. My daughter was struggling with Physics A Level throughout Y12 and very close to dropping it. She started lessons with Rob in the summer holidays and he has completely transformed her view of the subject and her belief in her own ability. Abbie is now just weeks away from sitting her A levels and with Rob's help, is thriving in Physics.
About
I'm Robert Treharne, an experienced Physics tutor with over 20 years of one-to-one teaching at GCSE and A-level. I specialise in helping students build confidence, deepen understanding, and improve exam performance. Many of my students typically improve by one to two grades through structured, personalised tuition.
I hold a Master's degree in Physics from the University of Warwick and a PhD in Physics from the University of Durham. I'm currently a Senior Lecturer at the University of Liverpool, where I specialise in educational technology and developing effective learning systems. This academic background strongly informs my tutoring approach: clear explanations, careful pacing, and a focus on understanding rather than rote learning.
I tutor GCSE and A-level Physics across the major UK exam boards, including AQA, OCR, and Eduqas. Each session is tailored to the individual student, whether they need support catching up, consolidating key topics, or pushing for top grades. I place particular emphasis on exam technique, problem-solving, and building confidence under exam conditions.
Outside teaching, I'm a keen gardener - an interest that mirrors my approach to tutoring: patient, methodical, and focused on steady progress. With the right support and time, students grow in confidence and capability, and results follow naturally.
Testimonials
Robert is a very experienced tutor with a passion to see his students excel. He has an ability to break down difficult concepts making it easy for my daughter to easily grasp the subject. Even after one lesson, I could see the transformation in my daughter's attitude she was more confident. I have been impressed with her progress that I have recommended Robert to other parents.
We have had two lessons so far - covering GCSE Maths and Physics specifically exam prep - and Rob seems great. He's a really fun warm and approachable tutor. My son is really happy to go to his lessons and feels Rob will definitely help him raise his grades in both subjects.
AMAZING TUTOR. My son is Dyslexic, Dyscalculia & has a poor working memory, he is at university and has extra tuition from Rob for Maths. Rob has helped him gain confidence and to catch up in his subject. We both recommend him 100%.
Rob is the best, I met him at a time I had difficulties in writing my experimental report. Being a good tutor he is, he made every thing so easy, he even explain a lot that am confident in producing a good write up.
Really helpful and learned a lot in just 1 hour.

Frequently asked questions
What does my child need for an online session?
A calculator, pens, and paper (yes - real paper!). Writing things out is an important part of learning Physics and helps students think more clearly, organise their working, and retain ideas.
Do we need a camera and microphone?
Yes. It is important that we can see and hear each other. This allows me to explain ideas clearly, check understanding in real time, and respond immediately if something is not quite clicking - just as I would in person.
How do online sessions work?
Sessions take place via video call using a shared whiteboard and worked examples. Students are encouraged to write, calculate, and talk through their thinking throughout, rather than passively watch.
Is tutoring suitable if my child is struggling?
Absolutely. Many students start tutoring feeling unsure or lacking confidence. Sessions are paced carefully, with key ideas revisited and explained in different ways until they make sense.
Do you set homework?
If helpful, I can suggest short practice tasks or exam-style questions between sessions. This is always optional and tailored to the student's needs, timetable, and workload.
Do you record the sessions?
No. Sessions are not recorded. This helps create a relaxed, focused environment where students feel comfortable asking questions and making mistakes. It also avoids privacy concerns and encourages active participation during the session.
Safeguarding and professionalism
I take safeguarding and professionalism very seriously. I hold an enhanced DBS check and have extensive experience working with young people in both school and university settings. All sessions are conducted in a professional, structured manner, with clear boundaries and appropriate communication at all times.
